The frame of the second prototype St. Lawrence River Skiff is finished. It’s exactly the same weight as the frame of last year‘s prototype but with 5% more scale and 20% more volume. So that’s a decent accomplishment and I’m convinced I can reduce it by another 2 pounds before I run out of places to shave. Additionally I corrected the end shaping on this prototype and I got the information that I needed to correct the sheer on the next one. I’ll probably start the next prototype in a couple week

Yesterday we tested three different “flipper” drives in the Prototype Pedal Drive Canoe. The first one is a generic copy of the older Hobie design that is no longer under patent protection. At less than half the price of a newer Hobie Mirage drive it’s definitely tempting, but there is a massive difference in speed/efficiency between this and the newer Hobie designs. Before I share the specs on the pedal drive canoe prototype I just want to make it clear that this is not the size I would normally build for myself. (our building system will let you build any size canoe) I deliberately undersized this canoe to try to find the lower limit of canoe size the pedal drive would work for. Also, I framed a good portion of this with spruce which adds significant weight over my normal western red cedar so this canoe would normally be a bit lighter. . Length: 14’8”, wid

Today I built a scrap wood prototype of the drive box to adapt the Hobie Mirage Drive to my skin on frame canoes. The first drive is a knock off of Hobies first generation Mirage drive called a Freedom Drive which retails for $325 and the second is Hobies current Mirage Drive 180 for $900 with reverse and kick up fins. I’m not sure if the reverse will be useful to me, but the kick up definitely will. The mounting geometry between both of these is different so I built the box specifically for the

Here’s a first look at the pedal drive canoe system in action. As always, there are many things i’m planning to change for the final version, but overall the launch went surprisingly well. The canoe is fast, maneuverable, sufficiently stable, and most importantly can be transformed back into a normal canoe in about 90 seconds. . i’m a bit tired at the moment but I’ll make sure I have more details in tomorrow’s post. Just a bit of early morning canoe testing. I like the new seat and tiller assembly; steering is exactly where my hands naturally fall and doesn’t shift when I take my hands off the tiller. The drop seat adds a bit more stability to this narrower pedal drive canoe (they can be build any size I just chose to go small on the prototype to explore the lower limits). Good ergonomics and effortless motion. This gives me everything I need to move onto the next prototype and start working on plans. . . .
